Systematic reviews are one way to efficiently learn about clinical findings for popular oral hygiene products, including powered toothbrushes.
This year, the Cochrane Collaboration issued a new systematic review comparing powered toothbrushes for plaque and gingival health.
The review showed that brushes with a rotation oscillation action reduced plaque and gingivitis more than those with a side-to-side action in the short term (4 to 12 weeks).
Out of 398 studies comparing power technologies to each other, 17 trials involving 1,369 subjects met selection criteria and were evaluated. Seven studies compared rotation oscillation and side-to-side (sonic) technologies.
The rotation-oscillation toothbrush technology, introduced by Oral-B® in 1991, is used in leading Oral-B electric toothbrushes such as the Professional Care SmartSeries 5000 with SmartGuide.
This brush has been shown to provide significant reductions:
- 34% less gingival bleeding at six months vs. a regular manual toothbrush.1
- 29% lower gingival bleeding scores at three months vs. a sonic toothbrush.2
- Quadrant timer provides visual guidance and timing to promote proper quadrant brushing
- Five brushing modes deliver a customized brushing experience
- Pressure sensor alerts patients if they brush too hard.
